Pride Month is celebrated every June worldwide for people who identify as LGBTQIA+. This began after the Stonewall Riots which has lead to a long history of prejudice and discrimination. Only around 10 years ago, same-sex marriage became legal in the United Kingdom! But there is still a lot to do to help this community. Homophobic hate crimes have increased by 41% and transphobic hate crimes by 56%.
Here at Oxfam, we not only believe in Pride Month, we believe in equality all year round! We celebrate diversity and prevent discrimination. We helped to prevent:
- Poverty
- Homelessness
- Unemployment
- Lack of access to healthcare
- Violence
- Sexual assault
- Mental health issues
To celebrate Pride Month, we have a range of CDs from LGBTQIA+ icons, Pride stock and rainbow stock. Come visit us in store at Low Petergate!
LGBTQIA+ stands for:
- Lesbian (women attracted to women)
- Gay (men attracted to men, although the term can also include women attracted to women)
- Bisexual (attracted to both men and women)
- Transgender (people whose gender doesn’t match the sex assigned to them at birth)
- Queer (a reclaimed term often used by those who identify as LGBTQIA+)
- Intersex (born with both male and female sex characteristics)
- Asexual (not attracted to anyone)
- + other sexual identities such as two-spirit, pansexual, gender fluid and more.
