This is the blog for the Oxfam Book Shop on Low Petergate in York

3 Unique Advent Calendars

If you’re looking for something a little different than your standard milk chocolate this year, look no further than our Oxfam sourced advent calenders! We’ve chosen three great ones that you can buy in store or through the Oxfam online shop, that will bring the festive spirit into your home as well as raise money for those in need this time of year.

Paper House Advent Calendar, £3.99

This advent calendar made from FSC reponsibly sourced paper is not just a Christmas countdown, but also makes a great mantlepiece decoration too. Behind different items of furniture there are beautifully illustrated festive treats, and the design means that whether you display it open or closed it’s stunning inside and out.

Divine 70% Dark Chocolate Advent Calendar

For those who still want a chocolate treat but maybe don’t have as much of a sweet tooth, this Divine dark chocolate advent calendar is perfect. Dairy free and vegan, too, behind every door is a small piece of organic fairtrade chocolate and an animal fact.

Advent Candle

Although these aren’t currently online they are available in our Petergate shop. Advent candles are a great way to count down December by lighting it every night of advent until the candle completely melts away. A great excuse to give your living room a cosy atmosphere with candlelight, an advent candle also means there’s no packaging left to dispose of at the end, so one less thing to get binned in the Christmas day clean-up.

Our Christmas window display is here!

You may have noticed if you’ve walked past the shop in the last week that we’ve fully embraced the cold weather and gotten into the festive spirit.

We’ve decorated our mini Christmas tree with Oxfam sourced decorations, which you can pick up for yourself in the shop, along with a lot of other festive treats. All the presents you see in the window are also wrapped in Oxfam gift wrap, as well, so if you do see a design you like don’t hestitate to come in and ask where you can find it.

We’ve also created a display of recommendations, either as a gift for a book-loving friend, or something for yourself to curl up under a blanket with this winter.

We’ve also got exiting new Oxfam Unwrapped gifts, cookbooks, food items, and a whole host of different things on our online store, so be sure to check in with us while you start planning your Christmas shopping this year!

We’re also going to be continuing our 12 Days of Oxmas series for the third year running, so check back at the end of November to see some great detailed Christmas present recommendations!

Celebrating World Food Day

Every year on the 16th October, every member state of the UN celebrates World Food Day. The aim is to raise awareness of the global hunger crisis and to raise money for aid, as 1 in 8 people (842 million in total) suffer from chronic hunger.

Oxfam is dedicated to ending extreme poverty and world hunger, so although there are many ways you could raise money on world food day, you always have the option of browsing through our selection of cookbooks online or in store to find something you can buy to support the cause.

Palestine on a Plate

We’ve already mentioned this excellent Palestinian cookbook on the blog, but if you missed it, Palestine on a Plate is Joudie Kalla’s ode to traditional middle-eastern cooking, full of healthy, colourful recipes and stunning food photography, printed on ethically sourced paper.

Living Food

Daphne Lambert’s Living Food is not just a cookbook, but a guide to living and eating with the changing seasons, with simple, healthy recipes designed to put you back in with mother nature’s rhythm. Eating more seasonally means a healthier body and healthier planet, plus it reduces the carbon footprint of your food and means the ingredients you use will be cheaper and tastier.

The World’s Best Spicy Food

A new book from Lonely Planet Food, this book contains recipes for tasty and spicy dishes from around the world. Each recipe comes with a breakdown of the cultural background of each food, the history and uses of the ingredients, as well as beautiful illustrations to accompany each one.

A cookbook and memoir rolled into one, Handmade brings together the stories of 34 Sri Lankan women before, through, and after war through recipes and food. With a story and exquisite photography accompanying each recipe, this book brings hope to the reader and nourishment of the body and soul.

And if none of these take your fancy, we always have a great rotation of second-hand cookery books in store, where you can grab yourself a bargain and learn how to feed yourself as well as your money going to help feed somebody else.

Volunteer Open Day 4th October

On Wednesday 4th October, the York Oxfam shops are hosting volunteer open days! What this means is that between 10am-2pm there will be a change to look around the shops, meet the current volunteers, find out about the different roles you can take on at Oxfam (plus get your hands on some free food!).

There’s no need to book, just show up on the day and have a chat to some of our current volunteers. This event is happening at our shop at 69 Low Petergate, as well as at 46 Micklegate and 7 Goodramgate. If you’ve ever considered volunteering or just want to know what goes on behind the scenes, this is the day to get some questions asked in a friendly, informal atmosphere.

If you want to read a bit more about volunteering now, we have a series of posts on the blog from National Volunteers week where you can read a bit more about other people’s experiences and the different roles we have to offer.

Remember A Charity in Your Will Week

This week has been Remember A Charity in Your Will Week, a week where many organisations work together to raise awareness for this way to donate.

Despite the fact that around 25% of Britons donate to charity regularly during their lives, only 7% donate something to charity in their will.

This year, the focus of #rememberacharity is to ‘have your say on the world you want to pass on’. Giving to charity in your will is a little known but vital way that charities can fund their operations, and without such donations many charities today may not have existed at all.

Here at Oxfam, our aim is to fight poverty and its causes across the world. As well as giving emergency aid during disasters, we also create lasting solutions to injustice in over 90 countries. We tackle global warming, healthcare, gender equality, and world hunger, meaning that a donation to Oxfam will have a wide reach, and help to build a better world with lasting impact.

If you want to know more about donating to a charity in your will, or want to hear about our free will-writing offer, there’s plenty of information on the Oxfam website.
