Here at Oxfam Petergate we are known for our wide selection of history books, crime thrillers and fantastic online stores. What you may not know however, is that we also stock a wide selection of non-fiction books, covering a range of subjects from music and the arts to computer science. This week in our “Instore Spotlight” we thought we’d spotlight one of our ever growing non-fiction sections, that being our diverse social sciences section.
OLIVER JAMES- AFFLUENZA: One of our more recent donations, “Affluenza” is the term James uses to describe “Selfish Captitalism” and the modern day obsession with envying others, and keeping up or succeeding with those around us. Of course this is why everyone today is seemingly so anxious and depressed. Brilliant and thought provoking, this is a book for anyone who wants to have a good ol’ think about society today and why we feel the need to want and pursue what we don’t have.
ESCAPE- CAROLYN JESSOP: Escape is an autobiographical account of one woman’s life as part of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints and her subsequent escape at the age of 35. She was married at the age of 18 to a man of 50 who already had numerous wives and around 30 children at the time of their marriage. After 17 years of emotional and physical abuse, where Jessop bore 8 children and experienced an emergency hysterectomy, she escaped and wrote an autobiographical account of her life and escape.
JACK GOODY- FOOD AND LOVE: Prominent anthropologist and comparative sociologist Jack Goody’s book “Food and Love” takes the reader on a journey of romantic love, the globalisation of various food makes us think about our rigid preconceptions of the world. Notorious for going against notions of difference between the East and the West, or even that the West is that special at all, Goody’s book is one for those who like a challenge!
